How to fix your depression by Workin’. A Boomer’s advice for a Millennial.

Millennials seem obsessed with a so called “Mental Health Crisis.” In reality the only true cure for crybaby culture is workin’, and workin’ hard. When my grandson came to me, complaining about not being able to sleep or eat. I knew what had to be done. He told me his medications were not working. Not… working. Clearly he knew his own answer despite his complaints.

I smiled, it seemed to me that these young people all want a quick fix. So I asked the question he dreaded most. “Well son, are you workin’?” He told me he had been recently unemployed due to the pandemic, and the current conditions…. blah blah blah. The excuses of a lazy man. It seemed clear to me. The boy was not workin’. The boy did not have a job.

He then tried to feed me some poppycock that it was hard for him to get out of bed in the morning. I had to stop him. He kept avoiding the answer to his own question. I asked simply, “Would you get up, if you had a job?” He then begrudgingly admitted defeat, “I suppose if I had a job, I would HAVE to get up in the morning.” Slowly, but surely, I was sure there was a man resting in this boy’s weak frame.

The next week he got a job working for Amazon. He started workin’ about 10 to 12 hours a day. The boy was paying his rent, the boy was paying for his groceries! The depression was cured.

As I attended his funeral 3 weeks later. I could not help but admit to my wife, that I knew why he committed suicide. She smiled, a knowing smile. She took the words out of my mouth before I could say them. “The boy just did not know how to work!”

As the coffin lowered into the ground, I made a little jab that perhaps would make it to heaven. “He’ll be in trouble up there! Saint Peter doesn’t take kindly to Sloth, that does seem to be one of the seven deadly sins!” It felt good to share a laugh with the other funeral goers. A laugh we had worked for, something my grandson would never understand.

Although I will probably miss my grandson. I will think of him when I raise the American Flag. This Country was made for the working man. Unfortunately, he had to learn that the hard way.
